Railgon, formed in 1979 as a subsidiary of TTX, was created to address a nationwide shortage of general-service gondolas by offering a shared fleet for hauling steel and other bulk commodities. Bearing “GONX” reporting marks, these cars were designed to boost efficiency and ease maintenance demands for railroads, with a rugged, “battleship-like” construction built to withstand the punishing conditions typical of gondola service.
